Burford's King Street Parkette

Based on your input, we created a refined concept that builds on what you liked about Concept 2 and incorporates the suggestions we heard.

Updates include:

• The shade structure has been moved to the rear of the site.
• The pedestrian kiosk is now closer to the sidewalk.
• Greenspace has been prioritized, with accessible pathways maintained.
• The location of the mural/public art has been adjusted to avoid blocking adjacent signage.
• Opportunities for a small play feature have been identified.

We also heard a desire for an alternative shade structure design. So we’ve created two versions of the refined concept. Option A and Option B, each with a different shade structure to choose from.

Once we’ve gathered your feedback on the refined concept, the project will move into the detailed design phase, bringing us one step closer to a refreshed and welcoming space in the heart of Burford.

Construction is planned to roll out in two phases:

• Phase 1 will include the parking lot and hardscape elements (like walkways and paved areas), with work expected to begin in Fall 2025.
• Phase 2 will focus on the finishing touches, including site furnishings and plantings. Depending on how Phase 1 progresses and the weather, this phase will likely take place in late Fall 2025 or early Spring 2026.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Burford King Street Parkette Open House on March 5, 2025, and to those who shared their thoughts online!

Following the Open House, we also posted two draft concept designs for the community to review and vote on. We received 41 survey responses, and 59% of participants chose Concept 2 as their preferred design.

But the feedback didn’t stop at just picking a favourite. Many of you shared helpful suggestions to improve the space — and we listened.

Key Themes From Your Feedback

• Move the pedestrian kiosk closer to the sidewalk to improve visibility and access.
• Relocate the shade structure to the back of the site to open up space for community events and gatherings.
• Maximize greenspace while maintaining accessibility was a high priority.
• Create a shade structure that reflects a small-town charm rather than a modern aesthetic.
• Add a small play element to better serve families and young children.

Bring a friend and speak to staff about the project, ask questions, and share your thoughts in person.

Local community groups have suggested things like:

• A multi-use shade structure
• Beautifying the park with additional gardens and trees
• Providing a social gathering space
• Public art displays and consideration of historical elements in the design
• An information board, possibly digital
