Key things to know!

  • As of January 1, 2025, Producers of the materials recycled through the residential Blue Box program will be responsible for running and funding the program.
  • The Producers will provide the Blue Box program to all residential properties at the same service level as prior to the transition (e.g. weekly curbside collection)
  • As of January 1, 2025 the County will not be involved in the residential Blue Box program, which will no longer be funded through property taxes.
  • Potential savings to the overall Solid Waste Operations Budget that result from removal of the Blue Box funding from property taxes will be placed in an Environmental Management reserve that will fund projects or initiatives to benefit the environment. With Council’s approval, these funds may also be used to offset any increased cost of the solid waste contract.
  • Given these upcoming changes, no Blue Box service options are being considered as part of this Service Review.

  • Share Email Question from Dave: I really like the idea of collections on one side of the street and the resulting savings in fuel. However, when someone puts out their garbage the night before collection and it gets opened up by wildlife and gets spread everywhere, who’s responsible for cleaning it up? If my neighbour puts their garbage on my side of the street and it blows all over my property, is it now up to me to clean up? The neighbour or the county’s? Thanks on Facebook Share Email Question from Dave: I really like the idea of collections on one side of the street and the resulting savings in fuel. Email Reply from Matt D'Hondt:

Thank you for your feedback, we will add your additional comment to your survey.

This is the type of input we were hoping for. In this scenario it would be the responsibility of the neighbour to clean up the garbage. We could update the County Solid Waste bylaw to include wording to address this scenario.

I hope you found the information provided on the project webpage informative and that the online survey was user friendly.

    Take care,

    Matthew D’Hondt, C.E.T.
