  • Share I live at 147 Hillside Ave in Paris. I was in the USA for a month and just back Thursday March 9th. I missed the open house on the Hillside/Race reconstruction. I am aware of the Race/Hillside Ave sewer project and I am apposed to any side walks on Race or Hillside. The streets are wide and do not need any sidewalks that would not enhance the properties on any of the streets. I would like to know why you have to tear up both roads, rebuild and add costly side walks that are not needed or asked for by residents? This is extremely costly for Paris/Brant County tax payers. Why cant you send the sewage down Old Mill Street which is a shorter route and that street needs repaving . Please advise your reasoning on the route of the sewage through Hillside and Race and why sidewalks are needed in our subdivision narrowing our frontal properties and spending unnessary tax dollars. on Facebook Share I live at 147 Hillside Ave in Paris. Hi Blake, I will provide answers to your questions in two parts below:

    1. Council has directed staff to consider adding sidewalk on urban streets when reconstruction or resurfacing is completed. Hillside and Race Streets regularly have pedestrians walking on the roadway, navigating around parked cars. Staff have therefore recommended that a sidewalk be installed on one side of the street. The location of the proposed sidewalk was determined based on a few constraints, such as grading impacts to driveways, location of utilities and existing underground infrastructure, and the location of future sidewalk connections. The street width on Hillside Avenue is being reduced by approximately 0.8m to minimize the frontage impacts to the affected property owners. The cost to add a sidewalk during a reconstruction is reduced in comparison to installing one later. At the meeting, a community walkability plan was presented which shows the existing sidewalks in the area, the proposed sidewalks through this reconstruction, and where future sidewalks are planned. The community walk-ability plan has now been uploaded as a viewing document.
    2. The proposed sanitary sewer works are required to accommodate increased flows related to recent and future community growth. The alignment and route of the existing sanitary trunk sewer will be maintained and only upsized to handle the additional flows.

Thanks for your inquiry. Yes, utility companies are made aware of the County’s planned projects in case they wish to install new servicing ahead of or in coordination with the County’s works. We’re not aware of any proposals to replace any telecommunications on Dundas Street West ahead of the County’s road work.

Hi Trevor, please find the responses to your questions below:

    1. The sidewalk is being proposed on the east side of Hillside Avenue (inside portion of the curve) until the southern intersection of Gilston Parkway and Race Street, where the sidewalk will cross and will continue on the east side of Race Street (river side) and along the County’s frontage until the intersection of Race Street and Ball Street.
    2. In addition to the proposed work on Hillside Avenue and Race Street, we will be presenting a community walkability plan at the public meeting. The plan details the location of existing sidewalk, proposed sidewalk (this project) and future sidewalks for the community. As streets are reconstructed in the area, sidewalks will either be added where there currently are none or replaced with a new sidewalk using current standards.
    3. The road width is being reduced on Hillside Avenue from Old Mill Street/Mile Hill Road to Race Street accommodate the proposed sidewalk and limit the effects on properties as well as existing storm sewer infrastructure.  At the Southern limit of Race Street (where it meets Hillside Avenue) to Ball Street, the existing road width will be maintained. A 1.8m wide concrete curb face sidewalk is proposed for this project.
    4. Until the project is tendered and actual prices are received, we can only estimate the cost associated with sidewalk which is in the area of $75,000 to $87,000.
