Why is this happening?

    • Older Standards: In the 1980s, systems were built to handle smaller storms. Today, we experience more intense rain that exceeds what these older, and smaller pipes can handle.
    • Urban Growth: More homes and driveways mean more "hard surfaces." Instead of soaking into the ground, rainwater runs off quickly into a system that wasn’t designed for this much volume.

What work has been done so far?

The County of Brant hired R.J. Burnside and Associates Limited to investigate. In late 2024, they interviewed local residents in targeted areas and inspected basements and yards to understand exactly where the water goes. They also reviewed the pipe designs from the original development and recent sewer camera reports to see how the system is functioning and determine what needs to be done to improve the stormwater management system. Burnside identified both private side upgrade recommendations and municipal infrastructure constraints.
