The County of Brant is developing its Community Safety and Well-being plan as required by the new legislative amendments to the Police Services Act. This will be undertaken in a collaborative manner through an advisory committee comprised of representation from Police and local service providers including health/mental health, education, community/social services and children/youth services, community partners and community members.

The process to develop the plan will include:

  • Identification of priority areas to address community needs
  • Identification of existing programs and services that support community safety and well-being
  • Community engagement to identify the assets, gaps and risks that exist in the County of Brant
  • Action planning to address priority areas

The goal of the plan is to support and promote sustainable communities where everyone feels safe, has a sense of belonging, access to services and where individuals and families are able to meet their education, health care, food, housing, income, social and cultural needs.

The Community Safety & Well-being Advisory Committee and community partners have identified six local priorities for further investigation and collaboration. Community and service provider engagement will focus on more detailed feedback to inform desired outcomes and strategies within:

  • Mental Health & Addictions
  • Youth services
  • Seniors services
  • Housing
  • Family services
  • Diversity Awareness

Mental health and addictions impact numerous residents in the County of Brant. Limited access to mental health and addictions resources in the County and increased rates of mental health and drug/addictions are proving the need for us to focus on these issues.

Youth often face a different set of challenges in their lives but still require the services, programs, support and action of their community. In the County, youth are involved with 30% of mental health calls and 35% of sexual assault investigations. Much like adults, youth also face barriers with regards to accessing services. We want to ensure that community safety and well-being within the County is not limited by age and that all citizens can lead the lives they deserve, while being supported by their community.

Please share with us your own thoughts with the youth experience in the County of Brant or services needed:

Limited access to affordable housing puts individuals at risk of homelessness, as well as endangering their physical and mental well-being. Focusing on making the steps towards more access to affordable housing options in the County of Brant, is another way we hope to encourage safety and well-being.

Like youth, seniors also face different challenges in their lives. Studies show that seniors are more at risk to be victims of fraud, as well as victims of assault in retirement/nursing homes. We want to ensure these risks and barriers are removed in order to guarantee that seniors living in the County can lead the lives they deserve, safely and inclusively.

The family experience is another focus of the Community Safety and Well-being plan. There is limited access to child protective services and limited support for families going through separation/divorce. In addition to these barriers, there are also no local resources for domestic violence. With this in mind we want to place more focus on the family unit, experience and victimization of individuals suffering from domestic violence in order to make sure safety and well-being reach inside the home as well.
