Update May 2023:

A new document has been added to the right side menu under "Documents" titled "Burford Water and Wastewater Project Update - May 2023". This update was mailed to all Burford residents and provides results from the survey, information about growth, provincial direction and next steps. The next public meeting will be planned for Fall 2023.

The County of Brant is pleased to engage with the Burford community regarding alternatives for water and wastewater services. Your input will be very important to the outcome of this project.

Why is the County considering water and wastewater alternatives for Burford?

  • It is time for road reconstruction and consideration for a new stormwater management plan in Burford. When major construction projects occur, it is a good idea to consider what other projects should also be completed. Now is the time to decide if watermain, sanitary sewers and stormwater sewers need to be installed.
  • Many septic systems are at the end of their life expectancy.
  • Some private wells do not meet Ontario Drinking Water Standards.
  • It is time to revitalize downtown Burford to promote a vibrant downtown core.

We are at the beginning stages of this conversation with the Burford community so please tell us what you like, what you are concerned about and what questions you have. This will help shape the overall plan.

As you may remember before the COVID-19 pandemic began, we hosted an open house to begin the discussion about water and wastewater services and improving drainage within Burford. At this meeting, we heard from residents:

  • Concerns that water and/or wastewater servicing will cost money
  • Some prefer their current systems
  • Concerns that servicing may lead to growth within the community
  • Some residents and businesses would appreciate having municipal water and/or a sewage system
  • Most residents agreed that improved drainage was important for the community

It’s really important for you to know that the County has NOT made any decisions about the outcomes or future plans. We want to work with the community to understand your needs and concerns and develop a plan together that makes sense.

The County is open to considering a number of options that will make sense for the residents and business owners in Burford. Some of the options could include:
Continuing with the current private water and wastewater servicing method OR

Providing a municipal water supply and sanitary sewage collection OR

A hybrid of the two previous options

We could also consider targeting specific areas such as the downtown for some servicing

We will also consider various drainage improvements

We do not want water and sewage. Brant County please back off trying to change us. The reason Burford is charming is because of our simplicity, we don’t want to change that.

I moved here from Brantford and intentionally bought a property in a low density area with a well and septic. We put an $8,000 RO system in and we pay a considerable amount of property taxes as is. It is completely unfair to even consider forcing tax paying and voting residents to switch to a costly service we not want and do not benefit from. It would be heartbreaking to see this beautiful town become like Paris, the growth there has ruined the simplicity of it. Brant County needs to be more devoted to its current residents and to sustainable development, which this is not. This is about making things easier for new builds, not about making life better for current tax payers.

I don’t want water or sewage. Right now if a house goes up for sale in Burford it’s sold immediately. What will happen If this is allowed well they can build more houses so our current house values will decrease-supply and demand, then they will charge us huge money for the installation and monthly upkeep, plus our taxes will double because they will need to build more infrastructure for the increased population. Then since our expenses have increased our quality of life with money and increased traffic will be lower. Not interested county of Brant and if you care about the residents of Burford you will back off and try and fix all the problems you’ve created in Paris with the new housing.

Its probably time this was considered for our area. Most of us enjoy our drinking water as its well water with no chlorine. As a Burford resident most of us live here in homes maybe not quite as nice as other areas for the same money. We like our small town, I realize we need some development, but would like to see it limited. I really feel Paris has been destroyed by over development. If you look at our Community we have everything we need handy on a daily basis. We are central. We still have a sense of Community. It would be a shame to ruin it. I am totally against the proposed 80 apartment building be proposed for the former Maple Ave School. We need more housing but this property should remain suburban residential.

Stop trying to grow my small home town! Our water if fine. We don't want to be another Paris!

I know the people prefer don't want this just the people of Paris didn't want the extreme development that has occurred. Wouldn't be so bad if the house is for spaced and that some of the Heritage trees and open waterways we're left untouched to Developers. No green space, no character, you're destroying what is considered beautiful in these small communities at a rate that is unprecedented. Stop allowing developers destroy everything in their paths. I'm not really sure how Brant County considers is sustainable development?

Just moved to burford - septic and well are fine - costs for water can range but our water in Paris for a family of 3 was close to 250 per month and most of it was septic
I do not want town water or septic reason we bought in burford
I also don’t want the building like Paris - this is small town which we love and we don’t need big name convenience like a star bucks

Ccicraigie about 3 years ago

seems like they county only wants this because developers are pushing for it so they can jam in more housing nobody wants.

We just replaced our entire septic system as we just bought in Burford. What will happen to the $20,000 system we just replaced? Do we get money back? Do we keep using it?
